A simple, fun Family Home Evening – Makes Me Happy

Our lives lately have swirled into a little black hole where our normal lives don’t exist. It’s extremely frustrating when this happens, because we become accustomed to this new black hole.

I woke up today and said to myself – I AM SNAPPING OUT OF IT! I am going to get back into my housekeeping schedule, my work schedule, and Sunday I’m going to church. Well, since tonight was Monday I decided the first step in getting back to normal is to do {Family Home Evening}

Something we haven’t done in a while, and something that is much needed not only in our home, but everyone’s home. Please click on the link that the words Family Home Evening gave to read about it, or under my topics click on FHE.

Tonight’s Family Home Evening, since being the first in while, I made it extremely simple… and fun. I made {Rich Dark Chocolate Fudge Sauce} in my adorable {Wildtree Fondue Set} and we sat around the table dipping strawberries and took turns saying…. “so and so (somebody sitting at the table) makes me happy when….” and then we say what makes us happy.

Some of Jayden’s responses: “Ella makes me happy when she makes a big mess.” “Ella makes me happy when she screams” I’m starting to think he didn’t get it LOL… but he had some good ones in there too like, “Mama makes me happy when she hugs me.”

We had laughs, the chocolate dipped strawberries were delicious and there’s another Family Home Evening memory that will stick with my kids in their hearts. Another Family Home Evening that will keep us as a family strong.

My goal from here on out is to make sure that I do Family Home Evening every, single Monday – no matter how hectic the day has been. This is something my family needs, even if it’s 10 minutes of sharing a few laughs, without the TV and a delicious treat.

Family Home Evening – Trying to be like Jesus

I have not been very consistent on Family Home Evening, but I’ve decided that this family REALLY needs it!! So, I’ve prepared my lesson and I think it’s one that I need the most. Our lesson is Trying to be like Jesus. If you want to learn more about Family Home Evening and how it can strengthen your family SEE HERE.

We will be reading THIS STORY out of The Friend and then we’ll throw some scenarios out there and take turns deciding whether the reaction is being like Jesus or not. We’ll also play a fun little game where we make a story. We’ll each add on two sentences and form a fun story that we’ll write down and treasure forever…. it might even pop up on Garibay Soup.

Our music will be I’m Trying to Be like Jesus from the Children’s Primary Book. We have a CD with the song on it, so we’ll just play it and sing along. I’ve printed out the lyrics and we’ll try to learn them together as a family tonight.

If you have any ideas to add to our Family Home Evening vault please leave me a comment and let me know!! And I hope that you will join along with the Garibay Family tonight as we make this family STRONG!

Building a Strong Family

If you’re a reader of my blog, then you’ve read this post before. I wanted to bring it back though. Especially for Works for Me Wednesday. Rocks in My Dryer hosts a wonderful carnival that gathers hundreds of bloggers that share what works for them. This week I want to share what works for us on building a strong family.

Remember the days when families used to sit together as a family for dinner. Talk about their days and bring laughter into their lives. Our society has cut this out of their lives and it’s sad. It’s sad that families are so busy that they don’t stop to appreciate what God has given them. A beautiful family that should be providing each other with unconditional love.

Bringing families close and together is a very important thing to the Mormon church, as it is to most religions. We implement something into our homes that strengthens our families and all it takes is one night a week.

It’s called Family Home Evening. Monday nights, the majority of the members of the church are gathered together in their homes strengthening the bonds that God has given us with our families. It’s a date and time that’s a guarantee in each of our homes that we will be together as a family, without media, without stresses, just us, God and the ones we love.

The way Family Home Evening is typically organized is as follows:

Opening Prayer
Sing a church song together
Quick lesson on any of these topics
Family Activity
Special Treat
Closing Song
Closing Prayer

You don’t have to be a member of the Mormon church to practice this. You don’t have to even give lessons or sing songs. Just having a set day a week to do some family activity together will do amazing things. Even if it’s just playing a board game and eating some ice cream afterwards.

Family Home Evening is a great time to discuss anything that needs to be discussed as a family. You can use this time to discuss weekly meal plans and chores, and go over the family’s weekly calendar. But the main thing is it’s important that you’re consistent, and you always end it with a fun activity and treat.

The last time that I posted this post I had a reader contact me to tell me that she’s not Mormon, but she absolutely loved this and implemented it into her family, and they all loved it. I feel so wonderful that her kids will have beautiful memories of their childhood, because she read this post from me.

I hope that I get some of you out there to join in with me. I’ll try to update every Monday with what we have planned. On my Topics that I Discuss on my sidebar, FHE stands for Family Home Evening. If you have ideas for great lesson ideas or activities, or even a yummy treat recipe you’d like to share please leave a comment and share it. Remember, you don’t have to be Mormon to have a Family Home Evening.

Carving Pumpkins

We had fun! Notice the Happy Birthday tablecloth ~ it’s my friends birthday today, and she was up visiting so we had a Happy Birthday pumpkin carving party. Jayden drew his pumpkin’s face. He’s pretty proud of it.

It was Family Home Evening and everyone jumped right into the carving pumpkins before I could give my lesson. So, while everyone was carving I was talking about prayer and asking Jayden questions about prayer ~ Jenise probably thinks we’re a bunch of religious psychos LOL. It’s so important to have that 1 day a week that you’re together as a family. It’s what builds strong families, and I owe it to my family to ensure that it’s done every week…. even if it’s a quickie 🙂

These are the moments that I’m so scared to lose. I don’t want them to grow up and not get excited about sitting around the table together to carve pumpkins. I truly treasure every single moment with these kids. Even the screaming fits I get out of them. Their personalities just shine through them and I love it! I love how they are their own individuals and I hope they stay that way. I don’t want them to change themselves for ANYBODY!

Family Home Evening – Extended Families

It’s a beautiful Monday. Church yesterday was very inspiring and the lessons that were taught had me really thinking. We’re going to try to get back into the swing of things and start back up Family Home Evening. For this week I was thinking about reaching out to our families that live so far away. The families that don’t have internet access. The families that have no idea about our family.

We’re going to work on a family letter and Jayden will draw pictures and we’ll print out pictures and get ready to send them off. It’ll be a fun little family project.

For our lesson we’re going to talk about the importance of family and our extended families. Jayden is starting to understand these things, so I think it’s important to discuss it. I’m going to work on a family tree with pictures. Something that would be fun ~ we can build it up to who’s still alive. On my side we still have 5 generations. It’ll be a fun lesson & project.

For our treat we’re going to do ice cream.

Family Home Evening – Getting To Know Each Other

To learn more about what Family Home Evening (FHE) is CLICK HERE. Last week I had my days completely confused and believe it or not we didn’t do our Family Home Evening. This week however, we have something fun planned!! It’s a little activity to see how well we really know each other. They do this for newly weds, but I’m making it fun for families too! We are all going to fill out our answers on a sheet of questions about ourselves (Jayden will just have them in his head) and then go around the room and see if we know each other’s answers.

Here are our 15 Questions:

What’s you’re favorite color?
What’s your favorite movie?
What’s your favorite current TV Show(no discontinued shows)?
What’s your favorite song?
Would you rather go to the ocean or play in the snow?
Would you rather be on a boat or on the shore?
What’s your favorite animal?
What’s your favorite thing to eat?
What’s your favorite shape?
What’s the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
What’s the funniest movie you’ve seen?
What’s the favorite thing you own?
Where’s your favorite place to go?
Would you rather go to Disney Land or Sea World?
Would you rather drink water or soda?

Happy Monday!!!

If you have question suggestions please add them in the comment section.

**EDITED TO ADD:
I highly suggest this FHE!! We had sooooooo much fun and there was much laughter doing it!!

Family Home Evening – Love at Home

Last week I talked about Family Home Evening and how important it is to Mormons and even Non-Mormons. It’s so important for the foundation of your family to have a set day every week that is focused on togetherness. To read in more detail about what Family Home Evening is please CLICK HERE.

This week for FHE we will be doing a lesson on Love at Home. I went and looked at this lesson and it’s going to be sooooo much fun!!! I went and bought a poster board to do it on and afterwards we’re going to eat yummy ice cream sundaes!!

Here is something that a reader sent to me about my post last week that really touched my heart! I actually got chills…

Stitchin’ Girl
said: “Thank you for your kind comment on my blog. I have been reading yours and it is truly inspirational. We are not Mormon, but what you wrote about family really hit home. Tonight we will be starting our Family Home Evening together. I can’t wait!” If you go read her blog she talks about how her first FHE went and it will just show you what it can do to your family. I hope she continues on with her Family Home Evening, because it is so needed in every home in our world.

Today is Monday, which means “Family Home Evening Time” We are going to be giving a lesson on Honesty. Our family activity will be planning what decorations we’re going to do for Papa Norm’s new studio at a nearby Retirement community. He should be arriving on the 1st and I already have the keys. So, we’re going to have it decorated when he walk in, so it feels like home. Tonight we’ll have Jayden draw some pictures and we’ll plan out what we will need to go over and decorate – then next Monday night our activity will be doing the actual decorations. Our special treat will be Cookies N’ Cream Pie…. mmmmmm I definitely can’t wait for that!

I hope that I get some of you out there to join in with me. I’ll try to update every Monday with what he have planned.
